A useful masculinity is not a costume assembled from borrowed gestures. It is the ability to carry weight without pretending the weight is imaginary.

Competence matters. So does the capacity to remain present when competence cannot immediately solve the problem. Listening is not surrender; restraint is not passivity; tenderness is not the opposite of authority.

The sharper question is not whether a man appears strong. It is whether the people closest to him can depend on his judgment without disappearing inside it.
